Starring Bigby and Alec
At the start of this journey, Bartholomew Lazarus "Bigby" Biggoran was contacted by a mysterious figure known as Variel to go to the city of Carhill in order to investigate strange happenings there. Bigby arrived in town and met with his contact Horatio, a cleric in training. Bigby learned that strange things have been occurring near the graveyard. When night fell, Bigby and Horatio went to the graveyard to where they quickly discovered a strange force was causing the dead to rise again. The duo was cast into a battle with a small group of skeletons. Sadly, Horatio was defeated, leaving Bigby the lone victor. In a moment of panic, Bigby looted Horatio’s body of some gold and carried the body back to town, leaving it in front of the local church.
The next day, Bigby found himself falling under a strange sleep spell, waking up next to a mysterious figure. This figure turned out to be Alec Barnswallow, a summoner with a snake named Mink. Once again, Variel brought them together. This time, he brought news of a possible necromancer. Variel told Bigby and Alec to investigate the town of Carhill, where the last necromancer to haunt the kingdom was buried.
Once in Carhill, the duo met with Issac Boid, a cleric in training from the local religious district. At nightfall, the three heroes went to the graveyard. A fog mysteriously rolled in from nowhere, and suddenly a few ghouls and a petitioner appeared. Bigby and Issac quickly dispatched the enemies, with Alec and Mink providing support. After the fight, the trio approached the tomb that held the necromancer’s body, only to find it empty. Issac, Bigby, and Alec headed back to town, splitting up until the next day.
In the morning, Issac brought Alec and Bigby news that they should investigate the Pace mansion. The mansion housed the necromancer at one point, the last inhabitant being Randall Pace, a relative. The trio once again set out at evening, as most ghostly happenings happen after twilight.
The Pace Mansion turned out to be a tougher challenge than expected. The trio was faced with a haunted ballroom, where an unseen party of ghosts was having a fancy dance. Going upstairs brought them face to face with Randall Pace. Pace was a tall ghostly figure, holding a hat box that used to hold his top hat. Occasionally, his head would move between its spot on his
neck into the hat box. Alec was struck with fear by the appearance of Pace, unable to move. Pace told the heroes that his remains were stolen from their tomb, ordering the trio return them or be cursed. Bigby quickly agreed, running the trio to the spot described by Pace. The remains were guarded by two wolves and a skeleton. Alec and Mink showed their potential in this combat, working with Bigby to defeat their enemies. Sadly, Issac did not survive the combat, with Bigby carrying the body back to Carhill after fulfilling Pace’s commands.
Alec and Bigby were then introduced to the Yellow Letter Society, a secret organization known to show up in areas of in need to help. Bigby was eager to join while Alec was a bit more hesitant. At the tavern, the duo learned that after the Yellow Letter Society left an area, strange events began to occur. Becoming suspicious, they decided to investigate. In the meantime, Alec and Bigby completed various tasks around town to earn extra gold.
The investigation into the Yellow Letter Society started with the local contact, a bard by the name of Xavier Wildwood. Alec and Bigby visited him at his house. Wildwood was friendly at first, but became colder as the questioning continued. After leaving, Alec and Bigby left to Port Westwood after receiving a note from Variel. They were given a cart and horse and headed on their way.
The trip to Port West Wood started smoothly. Toward the end of the trip, they heard a disturbance in the woods. Suspecting trouble, Alec and Bigby did what any adventurer would do: hide under their cart. A group of bandits came out of the woods, and began to talk about locating the duo. Bigby suggested using the paralysis potions they had purchased in town. The pair, with help from Mink, managed to take out and/or paralyze the entire mercenary party, until there were two left.
Alec and Bigby interrogated the remaining bandits, using the classic good cop-bad cop technique. After a questioning that included fire, threats of being eating by Mink, and a lot of confusion, Alec and Bigby learned the bandits were hired by Xavier Wildwood for a price of 30 gold and a party. The duo, insulted by what was being offered for their deaths, kept one bandit alive to lead them to Xavier in Port Westwood. The bandit went by the name Frank O’ Conner. Bigby took a liking to Frank, immediately starting to bring him to the side of good. Once in Port West Wood, Alec, Bigby and Frank set out to discover the secrets of the Yellow Letter Society and why Xavier thought they were worth only 30 gold. The universe, however, had other plans.
